Why we plan the uses before we plan the pictures, and how one half-day can carry months of communication.

Many brands know the feeling. A shoot day is booked, a photographer arrives, the images are beautiful, and three weeks later the team realises that none of them fits the website banner, the upcoming campaign or the brochure for the new development. The shoot was good. It simply wasn’t planned for the ways it would be used.

Content Pool Shooting is our answer to this. The principle is easy to state: plan the uses first, then shoot.

Starting with the uses

Every content pool begins with a focused briefing on objectives, audiences and brand expression. Before we discuss locations or light, we ask where the assets will live. Which channels, which formats, which stories the brand wants to tell over the coming months, and whether any of them will appear in print.

From there, we develop content themes and a creative direction, then translate both into a shot list. Every item on it has a purpose: a wide interior view for the website, a close detail of a material for a post on craftsmanship, a moment of hospitality for a campaign, a vertical sequence for social video. Nothing is photographed merely because it happens to be there.

One half-day, around 80 assets

With that preparation in place, a single, coordinated half-day of photography and video produces a pool of around 80 assets. Once edited and adapted for digital channels, and for print where desired, the pool supports approximately three to six months of communication, delivered with guidance on how to use it.

For the teams we work with, this changes the rhythm of their communication. Instead of searching for an image every time a post, a newsletter or a press request arrives, they draw from a pool conceived to hold together. The brand looks consistent because the material was imagined as a whole.

Why planning is a brand decision

A shot list is easily mistaken for logistics. We see it as brand work. Choosing what to photograph, and what to leave out, is a statement about what a brand considers important. A hotel that shows its staff at work tells a different story from one that shows only empty rooms. A developer who photographs the neighbourhood speaks differently from one who photographs façades alone.

This is why the package brings three of our service pillars together: Brand Strategy & Identity, Content & Creative, and Digital Experiences & Marketing.

Built to grow

A content pool can stand on its own as a focused project. It can also extend to executive portraits, press imagery, partner participation or content captured around a curated gathering. And it can become the first chapter of an ongoing retainer, in which regular shoots connect with publishing and paid campaigns.

Before production, we agree on the asset mix, usage rights and delivery formats, including any print requirements. Clarity at the outset prevents questions later, and it means everyone on set knows what the day needs to deliver.

A note on restraint

Around 80 assets can sound like a great deal. In practice, the number matters less than the fit. A smaller pool that works across every channel is worth more than a large archive nobody opens. We would rather leave a scene unphotographed than add an image that doesn’t serve the brand.

The camera captures the moment. The thinking that came before gives it its value.
